Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been observed that some people are choosing to purchase products that are locally produced in their area, rather than buying imported items. I presume that the benefits of these precautionary actions would surpass its drawbacks to a major extent. My position is elaborated further with reasons and relevant examples.

Examining the brighter side of, the foremost one is thatl the purchasing locally produced goods support their own economy. As the demand of these products increase, their production also increases giving a boost to manufacturing sector. For example, during the war in Gaza, bycott of many soft drink companies and fast-food chains resulted in immediate demand of local production. Moreover, preferring local items also provide employment opportunities for many people. This benefits the job sector as well as strengthens the industries and bussinesses. For example, staff is always hired when a business is running well to meet customer demands.

Furthermore, the mentioned benefits, local goods reflect cultural significance and are made keeping the needs of people in mind. To add to, it will also attract tourists and foreigners to try products which are widely used and prefered in a region.

On the contrary, I would not overlook the downsides. To begin with, local products are usually cheap but their quality can be compromised. That is why many people like to opt for imported items that are trusted worldwide even if they are expensive. For example, most of the individual;s buy imported skin care products becuase of the trust they have in those brands which will only use skin friendly ingredients.

To conclude, there are both merits and demerits of buying local products. However, I believe that supporting our own production is a positive trend because it is beneficial for economy and a support to businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and providing a clear opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The position is consistent throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the economic benefits are supported with an example, the point regarding cultural significance is underdeveloped and lacks specific illustration. The example regarding the boycott in Gaza is relevant but could be more clearly linked to the broader concept of local production. Overall, the response covers the requirements well, but would benefit from more detailed explanation of the 'positive' aspects to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the contrary', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Examining the brighter side of, the foremost one is thatl'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, and the transition between sentences could be smoother. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is logical and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'manufacturing sector' and 'employment opportunities'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'bycott' (boycott), 'bussinesses' (businesses), and 'individual;s' (individuals). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of precision and the presence of spelling errors prevent a higher score. Expanding the range of collocations would help improve the sophistication of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the demand of these products increase') and awkward phrasing ('the benefits of these precautionary actions would surpass its drawbacks'). Punctuation errors, such as the semicolon usage in 'individual;s', also occur. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and refining complex sentence constructions.
