Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent months there has been push to by local and support local vendors which would help community. Due to this awareness, consumers are choosing to by local goods, rather than imported goods. I support this idea as it helps generate employments and other benefits within the community.

This cause mainly helps goods that are mostly used daily such as fruits or vegetables. Since its local, there is no needed to add extra preservatives which are used in imported food items to increase shelf life. This would help consumers to eat organic or limited amount of pesticides infused food. People can buy other stuff from flea market which is cheaper compared to imported goods. There are some benefits of buying imported goods. Some products might have new technology embedded devices or some food items that are not mass produced in the current area. However, if there a push to buy local, these items can be made or developed locally. Since these are developed locally, there might be significant price difference compared to one which is imported from different countries. There could be a point where these goods can be shipped internationally which could be a renowned brand one day.

In conclusion, buying and supporting local goods is a positive trend as these goods can be priced economically, pesticides free, and easily available to consumers. It would also give a boost to employment in the area and also have less dependence on international goods which could save tax money and can benefit local communities in long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for buying local and the evaluation of the trend. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The reasons provided—such as freshness and economic benefits—are relevant but lack depth. For instance, the argument regarding 'new technology' in imported goods is slightly confusing and not fully linked to the local trend. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting ideas could be expanded with more specific examples or logical connections to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, maintaining a consistent stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas generally progress from one to the next. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'Since its local', 'Since these are developed locally'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the link between 'new technology' and the local market is not smoothly integrated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word-choice errors, such as 'push to by local' (instead of 'buy'), 'pesticides infused food', and 'other stuff'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'vendors', 'preservatives', and 'economically', the overall control is inconsistent. The errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the ability to express ideas with sophistication or nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('there is no needed'), missing articles ('in long run'), and incorrect verb forms ('push to by local'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often simplistic. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading for small errors like 'its' vs 'it's' would be beneficial.
