Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays an increasing number of people are choosing domestic products over foreign products. In my opinion this is a positive trend because it helps in growing national economy.

Although people should not totally avoid buying foreign products, they should critically think before buying. Foreign products may provide better quality, more variety or sometimes better price over domestic products. Neglecting foreign products may result in local companies increase price or reduce quality. For example, a smartphone manufactured buy a foreign company may offer better specification and durability compared to same alternative of locally produced product.

Major advantage of buying locally produced product is that the money remains in the national economy. When people are buying domestic product the money goes to a local company which the company use to pay salary, buy raw material or to expand the business; as a result local people get the benefit. When the company expands, it creates more job opportunity for the local people. In addition, government receives more tax from these businesses. Moreover, it lessens import pressure and reduces trade deficit. Furthermore, when people prefer using domestic product, it encourages domestic company to invest in new businesses. For instance, a local mobile manufacturing company may get motivated to manufacture better phone when they see the enthusiasm in people to buy local product.

In conclusion, choosing to buy domestic product plays vital role predominantly in economic growth. It results in significant increase in job opportunities and local development. Although this trend will boost economy, people should critically think before making a purchase.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local and the evaluation of the trend. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the economic benefits are explained well, the discussion on why people choose local goods (the first part of the prompt) is less detailed, focusing primarily on the economic outcome rather than the consumer's motivation. To reach a higher band, you should expand on factors like environmental concerns or trust in local quality, rather than focusing solely on the macroeconomic impact.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to link sentences, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between the second paragraph (the counter-argument) and the third paragraph (the main argument) could be more fluid to improve the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'trade deficit', 'national economy', and 'import pressure'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'manufactured buy' (should be 'by') and 'same alternative of locally produced product' (which is slightly awkward). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and ensure collocations are natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the national economy', 'a local company') and pluralization ('local company' instead of 'local companies', 'job opportunity' instead of 'job opportunities'). There are also minor errors in verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
