Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's world, an increasing number of customers prefer to buy locally produces rather than imported goods. This trend is mainly driven by several factors, including a quality concerns, people's desire to support local businesses and environmental concerns. I believe that it is a largely positive trend because its positive effects on local development make this approach more beneficial. One major reason behind this change is the desire of local residents to boost local economy and improve the living standard. Buying products from local shops would help those businesses to earn more, and eventually expand their businesses. It can create more job opportunities and strengthen local economy. Moreover, locally produced goods are reliable in terms of quality and prices. This is because every individual is familiar with the raw material used to create a product, and there are no additional costs included such as transportation cost and overseas taxes. For example, If an international company sells they products in another country they add exporting charges, put on taxes, which make the price go up. Furthermore, the imported goods usually travel long distances through different modes of transportation. It can increase transportation related emissions, which may lead to the environmental pollution. For example, more the distance the vehicle covered, more the green house gases are emitted. However, while this development provides several benefits to protect the environment and improve the people's living standard, the importance of international trade should not be overlooked. It plays an essential role to maintain the corporative relationships with other countries in the competitive commercial globalization world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and providing a clear opinion on its nature. The ideas are relevant, such as economic growth and environmental impact. However, the development is somewhat uneven; the explanation regarding 'quality and prices' is a bit simplistic, and the conclusion introduces a new point about international trade that is not fully integrated into the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported with more nuanced analysis rather than just stating the benefit. The position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the final paragraph feels a bit abrupt in its attempt to balance the argument. Overall, the structure is effective and supports the flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations like 'competitive commercial globalization', though some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'locally produces' (should be 'locally produced goods') and 'corporative relationships' (likely meant 'cooperative'). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but more precise and sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'a quality concerns' (article error), 'they products' (pronoun error), and 'more the distance the vehicle covered, more the green house gases' (missing articles and comparative structure errors). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on article usage, subject-verb agreement, and ensuring complex sentence structures are grammatically sound.
