Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is observed that some people prefers buying goods from their local markets instead of imported goods. In my opinion , this is a positive trend, and I will discuss my views in the upcoming paragraphs.

To commence with the pros of the mentioned trend, firstly, it is healthy for the peole. To elaborate this, When people buy goods like food from their own local markets. Then , the food which they receive is fresh, whereas the imported goods have preservatives for the long live of the food. For example, the survey conducted by the univeristy of waterloo in the hospital shows that 9 out of 10 doctors recommended to eat fresh food rather than chemically preserved food. Thus, this is one of the main reason of people for not having imported food.

Further strengthening this view, another striking merit is price of the goods. In other words, the imported goods are more expensive than the local products. They have more price because of tranportation charges and tariffs. Peple do not like to spend their extra money on the same food which thry can get at lower price from their own local market. For example, in Canada, the price of fruits and vegetables are much higher than in the farmers market. Therefore, people like to buy local food than imported food.

In conclusion, consumers demands are changing increasing from imported goods to local goods with the time. This not only aids them to stay healthy, but also helps them to buy cheap food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local goods and the opinion on whether this is a positive trend. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health benefits and cost-effectiveness. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding health is supported by a specific example, but the explanation remains quite basic. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesise the points made. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more nuanced analysis, perhaps discussing environmental or economic impacts beyond just price and personal health.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Further strengthening this view', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'To elaborate this, When people buy...'. Additionally, the punctuation around these devices is sometimes incorrect, such as the unnecessary spaces before commas. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more precise.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'preservatives', 'tariffs', and 'transportation charges'. However, there are several spelling errors ('peole', 'univeristy', 'thry', 'long live' instead of 'long life') and some awkward collocations, such as 'consumers demands are changing increasing'. The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on accurate spelling and more natural word combinations will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement ('people prefers', 'price of fruits... are'), article usage, and sentence fragments ('To elaborate this, When people buy...'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several instances of spaces appearing before commas or periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammar and refining sentence boundaries would be beneficial.
