Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern era, choosing locally produced goods by a few consumers is gaining popularity rather than imported ones. I think there are several reasons that I will discuss further. I urge it is a positive trend.

To begin with, locally produced goods are increasing in demand. This has many setbacks that follow, such as employment opportunities and supporting the local economy. The purchase of products produced in local areas helps to strengthen their small businesses, grow and create employment opportunities. Another reason is that local products are often considered fresher and more environmentally friendly. For example, locally grown fruits and vegetables usually travel shorter distances, which can reduce transportation costs and carbon emissions. In addition, some consumers prefer local products because they are familiar with the quality and production methods.

I believe that this is a positive trend for several reasons. Firstly, supporting local producers can strengthen the local economy. Small businesses may use their increased income to employ more people or expand their operations. Secondly, buying local products can reduce the environmental impact caused by transporting goods over long distances. This is particularly important at a time when climate change and environmental protection are major concerns. Finally, local producers can preserve traditional products and methods, which helps maintain the cultural identity of a community.

For instance, in Canada, many people prefer to buy fruits, vegetables and other products from local farmers' markets during the appropriate seasons. This allows them to support Canadian farmers while also purchasing fresh products.

In conclusion, people increasingly choose locally produced goods because they want to support their communities, obtain fresh products and reduce environmental damage. In my opinion, this is a positive trend because it benefits local economies, protects the environment and helps preserve local traditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and clearly stating a position that it is positive. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Canadian farmers' markets. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the points regarding the economy and the environment are mentioned in the second paragraph and then restated in the third paragraph. To reach a higher band, you should avoid repeating the same arguments and instead expand on them with more depth or distinct points in each paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the evaluation of the trend. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Firstly', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly weak because the content overlaps significantly, making the progression feel a bit circular rather than linear. Improving the flow between these sections would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication of ideas. You use some topic-specific terms like 'carbon emissions', 'local economy', and 'cultural identity'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common phrasing. There is a minor error in the introduction: 'I urge it is a positive trend' is an incorrect collocation; 'I argue' or 'I believe' would be more appropriate. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical issues, such as 'This has many setbacks that follow', which is slightly awkward phrasing. Additionally, the sentence 'I urge it is a positive trend' contains a word choice error. While there are some errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim for a greater variety of complex grammatical structures and ensure higher precision in word choice.
