Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the recent year, an increasing number of consumers are choosing to buy local products. The reasons attributed to this trend are concerns about quality, environment and the local economy. In my perception, it is largely a positive impact, as it can support local economy and environment.

The biggest advantages of purchasing from a local store is that quality is ensured, especially for fruits and vegetables. It is believed that locally produced are fresher and of great quality, because they reach consumer more quickly. In addition, they have greater confidence in local products as they can learn about how the product is made. Another reason is desire to support local businesses. Purchasing from small business can help them survive and create employment opportunities within their communities. Which in long-term could contribute to their economies.

Environment concern is another big factor. Imported products reach consumer by transportation through ships, planes or trucks, which could result in higher emission of carbon. Buying directly from local stores could reduce the distance covered by goods and hence potentially lower their environmental impact. Furthermore, some individuals knows the value of preserving their local traditional industries and products which otherwise could be lost due to international competition.

In my point of view, supporting locally produced good is a positive trend. It can strengthen local economy by keeping the money within community. it also encourages them to improve the quality as well as maintain traditional skills. from environment perspective, imported goods contribute to carbon emission. However, there is one drawback, local products are usually expensive and less varied from international good. Nevertheless, consumers can benefit from having a balance between local and imported products.

In conclusion, people are increasing choosing local products because they want to support local business, prefer good quality and reduce the environmental damage. Although, they can sometimes be expensive and with less variety, i believe the overall impact of this trend is positive

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend (quality, environment, local economy) and expressing a clear position on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the discussion on carbon emissions and the economic benefits for small businesses. However, some points could be developed further; for instance, the mention of 'traditional industries' is a strong point that could have been expanded with a specific example. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main arguments while maintaining the writer's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as quality and economic support in the second paragraph and environmental concerns in the third. Cohesive devices like 'In addition,' 'Another reason,' and 'Nevertheless' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some sentences within paragraphs could be more tightly linked to improve the overall flow and coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'carbon emission,' 'local economy,' and 'employment opportunities.' However, there is a reliance on simpler vocabulary, and some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'In the recent year' (should be 'In recent years') and 'less varied from international good' (should be 'less variety than international goods'). There are also minor errors in word form, such as 'Environment concern' instead of 'Environmental concerns.' Expanding the range of synonyms and collocations would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the local economy'), pluralization ('some individuals knows'), and sentence fragments ('Which in long-term could contribute to their economies'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances of run-on sentences or missing commas. The control of grammar is sufficient for communication, but the frequency of errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent article usage would be beneficial.
