Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is a growing trend among customers to purchase local items over imported products. The main reasons behind this are quality of service and affordability. In my opinion, this is a positive trend as it helps to build self-sustainable economies and provides jobs to locals.

A lot of people are buying local products as they are cheaper compared to imported ones. Big companies spend huge amount of money on marketing and supply chains, which eventually increase their prices. On the other hand, local brands generally work on word of mouth and do not require big supply chain. In addition to this, local companies provide quick customer service. In the case of defect imported products will have to travel back to its origin, whereas shops in their area will give instant replacement or repair. Because of these reasons, consumers are choosing locally developed products.

This is a positive trend as it helps to build robust markets. The availability of imported items depends on external factors. For example, during US-Iran war a lot of countries got affected by the disturbed supply chain. When people's requirements are being met by local brands, it reduces their dependencies. On top of that these companies hire residents. As a result, less number of people will migrate to a different place for a job. These people will earn and spend their money in the same area, creating self-sustainable economies.

In conclusion, people are choosing locally produced good because they are cheaper and provide better experience. I believe this is a good thing as it creates self-sufficient and robust economies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for the trend (affordability and service) and a distinct opinion on its positive nature. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on supply chain resilience and local employment. However, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, the claim that local products are always cheaper is a broad generalization that could be supported with more specific examples. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, and the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'In addition to this', and 'As a result' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. There is an attempt to use topic-specific terminology like 'self-sustainable economies', 'supply chains', and 'robust markets'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'defect imported products' (should be 'defective') and 'less number of people' (should be 'fewer'). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of less common lexical items used with greater naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'in the case of defect imported products will have to travel' (missing subject/verb agreement and awkward phrasing) and 'locally produced good' (should be plural 'goods'). Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentences could be refined for better flow. The majority of the content is error-free, but the frequency of minor slips prevents a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy would improve the score.
