Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are produced in their local area, rather than imported goods.

What are the reasons for this?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely seen that popularity of locally produced items are immensily increasing among few shoppers in comparison of imported ones. Although this essay will provide all the possible reasons associated with this shift, I strongly believe this is a postive development for the nation's economy, and for local businesses.

Affordability is the most prominent reason behind buying local products than imported ones. Since locally produced products are not heavily taxed by governments, these are available on cheaper prices to consumers. High import fees is directly added to the price of imported goods, while local items have no imported duties. For example, garments received from overseas often have shipping costs, such as airline or container expenses, which are further add in addition to actual price. Resulting in the increase of price and become inevitably expensive to buy. Therefore, importance of local goods is increasing among shoppers.

Certainly, this is a positive development because it is contributing in the growth local economy. Given that people buy products from nearby shops, this can foster the development of local businesses. Moreover, local business owners further pay taxes to the government after earning their profits. To illustrate, many parts of the world, states has introduced budget for local businesses where owners pay less taxes on local products sale as compare to huge taxes linked to imported goods. Consequently, this approach assist government to generate unimaginable amount of revenue annually.

In conclusion, because the local grown products are much more cheaper to buy due to low taxes, individuals are more likely to consume those regularly, in comparison of imported products. As this driving shift is helping local economy to grow, I believe this is a postive trend eventually.
