Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely noted nowadays that the consumers are generally relying on using the goods produced locally rather than the imported ones. This has proven to be true since the demand of local goods has been in the rise and it is directly proportional to the production of these goods.

The major factor that can be noted is for the production of local goods which supports the hardwork of the local people involved in the process. Families across our country are mainly into the self employment which includes the production of local goods. For instance, a family in Rajasthan has been manufacturing handmade glass bangles for the past decade. It has been their family business and they still continue it with perfection. This initiative has been well appreciated by the local community. Significantly, the younger generation has been the contributing factor by promoting the handcrafted goods in the social media and has helped reach the wider public.

Furthermore, the cost of these local goods also play a vital role. Since the entire manufacturing happens locally, the cost of these goods are significantly lower as compared to the imported ones. As a result, the general public appreciates the locally produced goods and thereby helping the local business. There is a real life example to this where we can observe the rise of homegrown car brands recently such as Mahindra and Tata. The imported cars from abroad comes with a huge tax on them which the consumer has to pay while purchasing. Subsequently, the indian car brands have developed a lot since the last decade and this has proven beneficial both to the consumers and the profits of respective indian brands.

I believe this is a positive trend since the procurement of locally produced goods is a win-win situation for both the consumers as well as to the sellers. The sellers are the families whose life depends on their family business. Also, the consumers are benefited by paying less and having the features as the imported ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the reasons why consumers buy local goods and clearly stating the writer's position that this is a positive trend. The ideas are extended with specific examples, such as the family business manufacturing handmade glass bangles in Rajasthan and the rise of homegrown Indian car brands like Mahindra and Tata. However, there are some minor tendencies to over-generalise, and certain arguments could be slightly better developed to reach the highest bands. Overall, all parts of the task are well covered, matching the Band 7 requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction, reasons involving employment, reasons involving cost, and a concluding evaluation. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'Subsequently'. However, paragraphing could be slightly refined, and referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical. There is a clear overall arrangement that meets the descriptors for Band 6.5 to 7.0, and looking closely at the flexible use of cohesive devices, a 6.5 is appropriate due to some slight clunkiness in transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'directly proportional', 'self employment', 'homegrown car brands', and 'procurement'. There are some minor word choice and collocation issues, such as 'in the rise' instead of 'on the rise' and 'helps reach the wider public' missing a preposition, but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficient for some flexibility and precision, fitting the Band 6.5 descriptor closely, rounded to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing (e.g., 'Since the entire manufacturing happens locally, the cost of these goods are significantly lower...'). There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'the consumers are generally relying' (unnecessary definite article) and subject-verb agreement issues like 'the cost of these goods are' instead of 'is'. Punctuation is generally sound. The frequency and nature of the errors place this firmly at a Band 6.0.
