IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are produced in their local area, rather than imported goods.

What are the reasons for this?

Is this a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is a surge in the number of consumers who prefer to buy indigenous products rather than imported goods. This is due to increasing awareness among people to use homegrown products to improve the economy of their country. This way, they also do not have to strain their pocket to buy imported goods. It is a positive developement because this change will help our country grow financially and the GDP of the country will rise.

To buy an international product, people not only would pay the actual price but also the custom clearance taxes as well. This way, they have to pay double the original amount. On the contrary, while buying a local product, they do not have to pay extra taxes. This leads to an improvement in a number of local product buyers. Moreover, the government campaigns are also playing an important role in raising awareness of the value of the indigenous products. For example, in a recent survey in Pakistan, fifty seven percent respondents supported local businesses and their products.

The shift from purchasing imported to local products is a positive development, as this will help local businesses to flourish, and the talent hidden in that country's people will secure a well-earned appreciation. Moreover, local sellers will grow their business and can export their goods to other countries as well. This will reduce the burden of taxes on public, as the GDP and the currency rates of the country will get better. For example, United states of America has observed a substantial rise in the currency rates after improving exports in 2023.

In conclusion, the pruchase of local items help people spend less money on shopping rather than buying imported goods. They are also aware of the significance of the local businesses to improve the economical conditions of the country. This way, local businesses can also grow to the level that they start selling to other countries.
