IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are produced in their local area, rather than imported goods.

What are the reasons for this?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The consumption of locally produced goods is increasing with time. People in large numbers have boycotted the import of goods. Consumers believe that the consumption of local goods could lead to growth in the local economy. For instance, if a farmer produces enough crop which fulfills the local requirements, then the cost of import is reduced for that crop and thus a country can save import duty.

I believe it is a positive trend for a country's growth. This will encourage people to develop good quality goods locally. China is the best example of a self sustaining society. With the support of their government they are now the leading manufacturers in the world. From assembling phones to building electric vehicles, they are mass producing good quality products. Chinese people now prefer driving their locally manufactured cars, as these are much cheaper and are of great quality. When manufacturs scale the production of goods locally, they could export the excess produced goods. This will further boost the growth in the local economy. Another reason for the rise of consumption of locally produced goods is that people don't want to compromise on the quality of goods they are using. One personal example is, I prefer buying my bread which is home baked, a few blocks down the road. The reason is I know the baker and their process of making bread. They don't put preservatives or excess sugar like other packaged breads and I always get fresh bread.

Although all goods cannot be produced locally, due to climatic conditions and habitat, but I believe good quality manufacturing should be encouraged. This will lead to increase in the consumption of locally produced goods.
