Student answer (Band 6.5)

Certain individuals are mostly choosing to purchase goods that are produced locally, instead of importing them. There are several reasons for this, such as easy accessibility and cheaper products.

Firstly, the most prominent reason to choose a local product instead of an imported one, is the ease of access to that product. Customer often chooses comfort and convenience over brands or overly priced goods. Secondly, people always considere value for money proposition whenever it comes to buying any good or products. Consumers frequently check the prices and get the items which they feel are cheaper. As the local items are produced from the same region, they are far more cheaper than the products bought from another country. For instance, a local honey brand which is easily available and sold at less prices is frequntly bought as compared to the one which is produced outside the country and have import taxes and duties applied on it. Hence, due to these reasons, consumers shifts thier focus on buying local products.

In my view, this is an optimistic trend because of two reasons. If people from the country starts purchasing the goods from their own country, then the dependecy on other nations for certain items decrease. This makes a nation more independent and make the country's economy grow faster. In addition to that, buying from the region help local vendors sell their products. Shops which sells local products often get hit by global companies which produces branded and imported products. In order to the help these local shops, consumers's shift towards buying more local good could be very fruitful. For instance, the current trend of Canadian buying local against the Trump's hegemeny has helped Canadian economy to boost, thereby making Canada much more stronger as nation.

In conclusion, people often tend to buy more local products because they are accesible and economical as compared to their imported counterparts. This consumer behavior not only helps the country to become self depedant but also helps vendors from the local region.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons for purchasing local goods and clearly stating a position that the trend is positive. In the first body paragraph, the writer outlines reasons such as ease of access and affordability, supporting these with a relevant example about a local honey brand. In the second body paragraph, the author extends ideas on how buying local decreases dependency on foreign nations and supports local vendors, citing an example involving Canadian consumer trends. Although the ideas are clear and well-extended, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise regarding the pricing of local versus imported items. Overall, the task is fully covered, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured into distinct paragraphs, featuring an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The writer employs cohesive devices to connect ideas, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For instance', and 'In addition to that', which provide a clear flow of thought. However, some referencing is slightly clunky or repetitive, such as 'due to these reasons, consumers shifts thier focus'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression is easy to follow, aligning well with the descriptors for a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'accessibility', 'proposition', 'dependency', and 'hegemony'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'considere' instead of 'consider', 'frequntly' instead of 'frequently', 'thier' instead of 'their', and 'depedant' instead of 'dependent'. Furthermore, phrases like 'less prices' show slight awkwardness in collocation compared to 'lower prices'. While communication is never impeded, these inaccuracies restrict the score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses ('If people from the country starts purchasing...') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, such as 'Customer often chooses' (consumers choose), 'products which produces' (which produce), and 'Shops which sells' (shops which sell). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues and minor morphological slips. These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall comprehension, placing the performance solidly within the Band 6.0 descriptor.
