Student answer (Band 5.0)

There has been an increasing trend among individuals towards buying local goods, rather than consuming imported products. The trend originally started to support small local businesses, but gained popularity as the quality of the products were also superior to that of the imported ones. I am in firm support of choosing our own products over foreign market.

While there was a time when imported products were on the rise in our country, because of the high demand of these products. There were very few regional businesses that used to produce similar goods, but the stock used to be very limited. Hence, there used to be no other option but to purchase imported goods.

Due to the increasing number of young entreprenuers in the country, who firmly believe that everything can be made locally and that too of exceptional quality, we now see more and more people turning their backs to imported goods.

Other than top notch quality, local goods cost a fraction of the price compared to the imported ones.

This was a huge reason for popularity of local makeup products among youngsters.

Supporting local businesses also helped boost the economy of the country. A recently published article showed statistics of how economy has improved since people started opting to buy domestic products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing reasons for buying local goods and offering an opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. However, the essay is unfinished and abruptly cuts off mid-sentence at 'Local products always have a homely feeling and we should'. Furthermore, the Length Check confirms the response contains only 223 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This negative impact on task completion, combined with the lack of full development for the concluding opinion and supporting points, results in a Band 5.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates some organizational structure with distinct paragraphs, although several paragraphs are extremely brief, consisting of only one or two sentences. Cohesive devices are occasionally used, but referencing is sometimes weak, such as in the abrupt transitions between the historical context and modern entrepreneurial factors. The essay lacks overall progression and logical conclusion due to the incomplete ending. Paragraphing is used, but it is insufficient and poorly developed in places, aligning the text with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'top notch quality' and 'young entreprenuers' (spelled 'entreprenuers'). There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'quality of the products were' (subject-verb agreement), but the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic meaning. The resource lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and sentence fragments, such as 'While there was a time when imported products were on the rise in our country, because of the high demand of these products,' which is a dependent clause treated as a complete sentence. Errors in punctuation and spelling are noticeable, and the sentence structure breaks down entirely at the abrupt conclusion, justifying a Band 5.0 score.
