Student answer (Band 7.0)
In today' evolving world, an increasing number of consumers have preferred to purchase goods produced locally rather than imported products. This trend can be caused by several factors including concerns about products quality, support for local businesses and environmental awareness. In my view, it is a positive development because it strengthen local economics and reduce the pollution because of transportation.
Out of all the arguments, one of the major reason choose locally produced goods is that they often have greater confidence in their quality and freshness. That is to say, locally grown fruits, vegetables and dairy products may reach consumers to local people more quickly than imported foods. In addition, consumers want to know where their products come from and how they are produced. For example, someone living in Calgary may prefer purchase vegetables and fruits form nearby farm because they can learn more about the farming methos and also support local farmers.
Another significant reason is that buying from local areas can improve economic growth and environmental perspectives. Buying local products can reduce the distance goods need to travel and lower transported emissions. It can also make communities less dependent on international chains, which can be disturbed during global economic crises and natural disasters. Moreover, locally produced goods are cheaper, reliable and more environmentally friendly.
In conclusion, people are increasingly buying local products because they value freshness, quality, support community and environmentally sustainability. Although imported goods remain important and come with variety, the growing preference for local products is generally a beneficial development for both communities and the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons for buying local goods and discussing whether this trend is positive or negative, maintaining a clear position throughout. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when the writer explains consumer confidence in food freshness by mentioning dairy products and local farms in Calgary. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean into repetitive points, particularly in the third paragraph where economic growth and environmental perspectives are introduced but slightly under-developed in terms of specific examples. To reach a higher band, all main ideas would need more fully extended support without repeating similar themes like environmental friendliness across multiple paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction that outlines the reasons and the writer's positive stance, moving through specific reasons in the body paragraphs, and concluding effectively. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, such as 'Out of all the arguments', 'In addition', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. To achieve an even higher level, the management of referencing and transitions could be slightly more seamless to prevent any sense of mechanical progression between the body sections.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, attempting less common items with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'environmental awareness', 'global economic crises', and 'environmentally friendly'. There are, however, occasional errors in word choice and word form, such as 'products quality' instead of 'product quality', 'farming methos' instead of 'methods', and 'lower transported emissions' instead of 'transport-related emissions'. These errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary remains adequate for the task. To reach the next band, the writer needs to eliminate minor morphological errors and demonstrate greater control over less common lexical collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures like relative clauses ('goods that are produced in their local area') and conditional ideas. There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside some errors in grammar, such as 'one of the major reason choose' instead of 'reasons for choosing', 'prefer purchase' instead of 'prefer to purchase', and a missing article in 'support community'. Punctuation and control are generally good, and these persistent errors rarely impede communication. To move up to the next band, the writer must consistently maintain grammatical control across complex structures and reduce slips in verb complementation and subject-verb agreement.
