Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, some buyers are increasingly choosing to purchase products that are made in their local place rather than products from abroad. From my own perspective, this can lead to positive development to a local area because it increase the promotion of local products.

One reason for buying goods that are produced in their local area is the lower price rather than products coming from abroad which is obviously higher for the price because of shipment and other reasons. For instance, buyers prefer going to the market to buy some clothes rather than ordering some branded clothes from abroad, aside from more expensive, this can cost more because of the shipment fee of the item.

Additional reason is, some buyers wanted to promote their own local brands and to be well known. Moreover, this can lead to positive trend because communities are helping each other to increase the demand of their products. For example, in one town making bags from old clothes, and made it well presentable and can use daily. With this product, not only from locals will buy, but It can attract some tourists people to buy it and visit the place.

To conclude, increasing the number of purchaser of local products rather than from abroad is a good development of the place because it is one way of promoting their own products and can help attract to increase tourist.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the task by identifying reasons for buying local goods and expressing a clear position that it is a positive development. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 223 words (excluding 8 words copied directly from the prompt), falling short of the 250-word minimum. The ideas presented are somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the explanation regarding lower prices due to shipping costs is repeated in the conclusion without substantial extension, and the discussion on supporting local brands lacks deeper analysis or varied examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing a clear attempt to structure the essay. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text, and the flow between ideas is occasionally disjointed. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or inaccurate, such as using 'Additional reason is,' lacking a proper subject or article, and overusing phrases like 'rather than products coming from abroad.' Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion, but the internal links within paragraphs require better logical transitions to guide the reader smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, resulting in a restricted range. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'local place' instead of 'local area', 'higher for the price' instead of 'more expensive', and 'tourists people'. Spelling and word formation are generally functional, but attempts at less common vocabulary are constrained by repetition and a lack of precise collocation, preventing the response from achieving a higher level of expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it increase', 'bags from old clothes, and made it well presentable'), awkward prepositional phrases, and missing articles. For example, the sentence 'in one town making bags from old clothes, and made it well presentable' lacks a main verb and proper clause structure. Punctuation is also basic and occasionally hinders readability.
