Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays the cost of living is getting higher and higher and consequently consumers are choosing wisely how they spent their money. Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are locally made rather than imported ones because they are used to local brand which are cheaper and cost efficient rather than foreign goods.

The reason why some consumers prefer to consume locally is because the products are freshly made .For examples, buying fish from fish mongers rather than imported frozen ones. It is also important to protect the job of local people and this is possible through selling their local-made product.

The positive aspect of selling locally made products are beneficial to the economy of the country. Money spent on local goods stays in the country rather than on imported goods. Therefore higher investment means higher revenue.

However, the negative trend could be loss of competition from imported goods which will prevent local producers from innovating their products. Hence consumers will not get the latest design of what is being sold in foreign markets.

In my opinion, It is important to have a variety of choices both from local and imported producers. However, the consumers could decide where he gets better ones and at cheaper price.Nevertheless, the government intervention is crucial in regulating the prices so that consumers do not pay excessively on items he could get cheaper elsewhere.

To conclude, as we say 'customer is king', the final decision lies in the customer's hand as he should decide where to purchase to get more satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing reasons for buying local goods and evaluating both positive and negative aspects. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack sufficient extension. For instance, the economic benefit is mentioned briefly as higher investment leading to higher revenue without adequate explanation or examples. Furthermore, note that the response contains 247 words and therefore fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, with 10 words copied from the prompt excluded from the word count. To reach a higher level, you need to develop your arguments more fully and ensure you securely exceed the word count threshold.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into paragraphs that follow a logical sequence from reasons to advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The reason why', 'For examples', and 'However', but referencing is sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in the slightly abrupt transitions between paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but smoother logical bridges between the economic arguments and the concluding thoughts would elevate the cohesion to a more natural standard.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your meaning regarding consumer habits and local production. You attempt less common vocabulary such as 'cost efficient', 'protect the job', and 'government intervention', but there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'local brand which are cheaper' instead of 'local brands which are cheaper', and 'local-made product'. These spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band, you should demonstrate a wider range of precise lexical items used with greater control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms used throughout the essay, demonstrating a basic control of syntax. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('brand which are', 'consumers could decide where he gets'), incorrect pronoun reference ('where he gets better ones', 'items he could get'), and unnecessary capitalization after commas ('In my opinion, It is important'). While these errors rarely impede communication, the limited range of accurate complex structures and frequent minor slips prevent the grammar score from rising higher.
