Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, a growing number of buyers choose locally produced items over the items brought from other countries. Not only does this trend strengthens local businesses, but it also saves huge amount of tariff which makes it a positive development.
One compelling reason of choosing local goods is to boost the profit of one's country's business. Since money spent on goods which are made in a particular nation, solely goes to someone who produced it and who sold it. Consequently, more people buy local goods, more revenue will be generated by local shopkeepers and producers. For instance, if an individual buy a $5 notebook which is made in Canada, whole money will be distributed among seller and a business who produced it.
Another significant reason is that buying local things could save huge amount of money that could be charged by other nation in the form of tax. If another country produces and exports any item, hidden charges such as exporting expenses and tariff are applied on that particular thing. As a result, people have to spend more money on things that are imported from other parts which has detrimental effects on local economy. For example, individuals have to pay an extra 5% of tariff on goods imported from America in Canada.
Despite these merits, certain demerits cannot be overlooked. Locally produced things are sometimes more expensive due to small scale production and high labour cost. Moreover, things produced locally are generally lack variety due to the unavailability of advanced technology. Hence, imported things could provide more choice and inexpensive items.
To conclude, although locally produced items save money in the form of tax and increase profit of local businesses, imported things provide variety of choise and competitive price range.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons for buying local goods and whether this is a positive or a negative trend. Your position is clear from the beginning and maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which places this response at the target level. For example, your first body paragraph explains why money stays within the local economy, but the development remains somewhat repetitive when you mention that 'whole money will be distributed among seller and a business'. The discussion on whether the trend is positive or negative touches upon both tariffs and higher prices, yet these points could be extended further with deeper explanations. To reach a higher level, you need to ensure that every main idea is fully elaborated with robust supporting details rather than relying on brief examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and shows a clear attempt at organizing information into logical paragraphs. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with reasons and moving to disadvantages before ending with a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Consequently', 'Another significant reason', and 'Despite these merits', which demonstrates that you can guide the reader through your arguments. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical or faulty, and referencing can feel repetitive. For instance, transitional phrases tend to follow a rigid formula at the start of paragraphs. To move further up the scale, you need to use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally, ensuring that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow seamlessly without sounding formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'compelling reason', 'detrimental effects', and 'small scale production'. Your word choice is generally clear enough to communicate your ideas without causing confusion for the reader. Nevertheless, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form that prevent a higher score. For example, writing that the trend 'strengthens' local businesses is acceptable, but you previously wrote 'strengthens' with a subject-verb agreement slip, and phrases like 'huge amount of tariff' or 'locally produced things are generally lack variety' contain lexical and grammatical infelicities. To achieve a higher band, you should expand your use of precise vocabulary and pay closer attention to natural collocations and exact word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct multi-clause sentences using subordinating conjunctions like 'Since' and 'If'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include article and preposition usage issues, such as 'saves huge amount' missing a determiner, 'an individual buy' showing a subject-verb agreement error, and 'in Canada' placement regarding imported goods from America. Additionally, you occasionally misuse plural and singular forms, as seen in 'provide variety of choise'. To elevate your grammar score, you should focus on eliminating basic agreement and article errors while incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures.
