Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays more and more people prefer buying goods that are procuded locally rather than buying imported goods. This is mostly because locally produced goods are fresher and support local businesses and workers. In my opinion, this is a positive trend because it can benefit both local economy and environment.

One of the main reasons people choose local products is their freshness and quality. Locally produced food, for example, usually reaches consumers faster than imported food, which may need to be stored and transported for a long time. In adition, many people want to support local business bucase their purchase help create jobs and keep money within the community. Another reason is that consumers are becoming more environment consious. Buying local products generally involves shorter transportation distances, which can reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

I believe this is a positive development for several reasons. Firstly, increased demand for local products can strengthen the local economy by helping small businesses and farmers grow. This can also create more employment opportunities for people in the area. Secondly, purchasing local goods can reduce dependence on foreign suppliers which can particularly be beneficial for local business. For instance, during emergencies, locally available products can be more reliable than goods that depend on international transportation.

In conclusion, people are increasingly choosing locally produced goods because of their freshness, quality, availability, environmental benefits and support for local business. Overall, I believe this is a positive trend as it can contribute to a stronger local economy while also reducing the environmental impact to transportation

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining the reasons behind buying local goods and evaluating whether this trend is positive or negative. Your position is clearly stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are generally well extended and supported, such as when you discuss how local purchases reduce transportation distances and carbon emissions. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or under-develop certain points, such as the brief mention of emergencies in the third paragraph, which is not fully elaborated. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that every supporting point is thoroughly explained with deeper analysis or more concrete examples rather than summarized quickly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, followed by reasons, then an evaluation of the trend, and a concise conclusion. You use cohesive devices effectively to connect your ideas, such as 'One of the main reasons', 'In adition', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly'. However, there are minor mechanical elements in how some transitions are handled, and referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could make the transitions between paragraphs more seamless and vary your cohesive phrases to avoid predictable structuring.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your meaning with terms like 'transportation distances', 'fuel consumption', and 'employment opportunities'. You attempt some less common lexical items, such as 'environment consious' and 'foreign suppliers', but there are a few noticeable spelling errors and word choice slips, including 'procuded' instead of 'produced', 'adition' instead of addition, and 'bucase' instead of because. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band. To improve, you should focus on spelling accuracy and attempt more precise collocations and sophisticated vocabulary relating to economics and the environment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation with a variety of complex sentence structures, such as concessive and relative clauses ('goods that are produced in their local area', 'which can particularly be beneficial'). There are frequent error-free sentences throughout the text, showing a good handle on verb tenses and clause combining. However, a few minor errors persist, such as missing commas before dependent clauses and minor agreement slips. Your control of sentence structures is solid, and to move higher, you would need to eliminate all minor punctuation slips and produce an even wider range of sophisticated sentence patterns with total accuracy.
