Student answer (Band 6.0)

The number of shoppers who are deciding to purchase local goods as opposed to goods from abroad is increasing. There are various reasons for this including people wanting to support local. I believe this is a good thing, with local businesses thriving.

Nowadays, many people are encouraged to shop local and there are alternative reasons for this. In today's world, it is easy to purchase almost any type of goods from across the globe by using internet shopping platforms, such as ebay or amazon. Despite this, in many places, different iniatives have been introduced to aid the purchase of local produce. An example includes many advertisements encouraging people to shop and support local. Many supermarkets now have labels detailing where products originate with several people feeling more comfortable knowing where food comes from.

Also, they feel a sense of fulfillment knowing they are supporting a local business. As a result, the number of consumers is increased.

Positively, local businesses are more likely to succeed and this must be seen as a benefit. Not only does it enable more employment in the local area, but it is also promotes smaller businesses compared to global chains and for many people this is beneficial. Creating competition amongst providers also increases the chance of consumers getting better deals as businesses try to promote their products by offering promotions and thus consumers can obtain a better deal on goods.

To conclude, the amount of people choosing to buy local goods is increasing in comparison to purchasing goods from other countries. Many of these consumers want to support local because they are encouraged to do so and they feel comfort and satisifaction doing so. Lastly, it must be viewed as a positive trend as both the local business and consumer benefit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for choosing local goods, including encouragement through advertising and labels showing where products come from, and you clearly judge the trend positively. The benefits you identify—supporting local businesses, creating employment and giving consumers access to better deals—are relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that local purchasing creates competition and better deals would be stronger with a clearer explanation of how this works, while the reasons for consumers’ choices could be developed beyond encouragement and personal satisfaction. A specific example, such as a local food producer or community campaign, would also make the discussion more convincing and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph on positive effects, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “Despite this,” “As a result,” and “To conclude.” At times, however, connections between ideas are mechanical or unclear. The sentence “As a result, the number of consumers is increased” does not clearly specify which consumers or explain the link to the preceding point. The opening of the second body paragraph, “Positively,” is also an awkward transition. Improve progression by linking each claim directly to its explanation and using pronouns or repeated key terms with clear references.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “local produce,” “global chains,” “employment,” “promotions,” and “consumers.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “a sense of fulfillment” and “in comparison to.” However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “support local,” “the number of consumers is increased,” and “feel comfort and satisfaction.” Spelling errors such as “iniatives” and “satisifaction” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording—for instance, describe consumers as “choosing locally produced goods” and businesses as “attracting customers” rather than relying on broad or awkward phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast structure “Despite this” and the paired construction “Not only does it enable… but it is also…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “it is also promotes smaller businesses,” the auxiliary “is” should be removed; in “the number of consumers is increased,” the passive construction is awkward and the subject–verb relationship could be expressed more directly. The sentence beginning “Not only does it enable…” also shifts from “it” to “they,” making the reference unclear. Continue using varied structures, but check auxiliary verbs, agreement and pronoun references carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the argument smoother.
