Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some customer are increasingly choosing to buy locally made goods, rather than goods bought from abroad.
This essay will address the reasons for this preference and indicate whether this is a positive or a negative trend with relevant examples.
Some customers purchase locally manufactured goods, rather than goods purchased from other places due the trust and confidence they have on the locally made goods. People prefer to buy goods that they are sure of what the manufacturers used for the product rather than what might turn out to be different after purchase. Buying goods made locally contains items that the customers body system are already used to. For example tomato paste made locally. The problem of allergy and one's body reacting to the contents would not be made possible. This is because the customers are already used to the contents of the paste such garlic and ginger and other items grown locally.
Secondly, the cost of foreign made products are more expensive than the locally made.
This is are a result of import duties and other forms of taxation levied on such items. For example beverages such as Ovaltine brought into Nigeria are costlier than the one made by Lever Brothers Nigeria limited. This cost make hardly affordable for the customers who in turn take solace in the goods made locally.
The customer's choice of local made goods over imported items however has a very positive trend.
It encourages the local companies to grow . For example, company that manufactures indomie noodles in Nigeria has grown too big and have branches all over the country. It pays taxes to the government which is used in developing the country . This is achieved due to the preference of their noodles over the imported ones. It also creates employment opportunities for the teaming population. For example ,
Honeywell spaghetti offers employment opportunities to over 5,000 Nigerian youths. These youngsters would be roaming the streets if, Nigerians consume only imported spaghetti.
In conclusion, the consumers choosing locally made goods over the imported ones should be encoraged as it boost local industries which in turn create employment opportunities for the teaming population.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both questions: you explain preference through confidence in local products and lower prices, then clearly judge the trend to be positive. The examples of tomato paste, Ovaltine and local noodle and spaghetti companies make the response relevant, and your conclusion reinforces your position. The economic benefits—company growth, tax revenue and employment—are particularly clear. However, the health-related explanation is less convincing: being accustomed to local ingredients does not by itself establish that a product is safer or prevents allergies. Some examples are asserted rather than explained, and the reasons could be developed more evenly. To strengthen the response further, clarify the link between each reason and consumer choice, and qualify broad claims with specific, credible explanation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining reasons, a paragraph evaluating the trend, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Secondly” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages, while examples generally appear alongside the points they support. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and links between sentences are not always smooth. The first reason paragraph moves from trust to bodily familiarity and allergy without making the relationship clear. There is also some repetition of “locally made goods” and “imported” wording. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to its main point; vary linking expressions and use pronouns or concise references where the meaning remains clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to discuss local production and its economic effects, including “manufactured goods,” “import duties,” “taxation,” “employment opportunities” and “preference.” These choices show an attempt to use language beyond basic everyday terms. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “have confidence on” would be more naturally expressed as “have confidence in,” and “take solace in the goods” does not convey choosing affordable products clearly. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form problems, such as “encoraged” and “teaming” where “teeming” is intended. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling; precise phrasing will make your ideas easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and conditional phrasing such as “if Nigerians consume only imported spaghetti.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to process. Examples include “Some customer are,” “the cost … are,” and “This is are a result,” which show problems with agreement and verb forms. Other sentences have unclear or incomplete structures, such as “The problem of allergy and one's body reacting to the contents would not be made possible.” Articles, plurals and punctuation also need attention. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, then review agreement and sentence boundaries, especially in longer explanations.
