Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is a growing trend among customers to buy products from local shops over international brands. This development is not only advantageous to the local economy but also encourages people to set up new businesses in the area.

To begin, people have become more mindful of their purchases while international brands are known to exploit natural resources, making consumers deter away from buying their products. Meanwhile, there has been a significant improvement in logistics over the past decade, making it easy for local vendors to distribute their products. Also, the cost of transportation over the road has reduced significantly, making local products cheaper and more accessible. As a result, Canadian beer, brewed in the mountains of Algonquin, can be sold across Canada, competing with their European counterparts. This becomes an easy choice for many customers fueled with patriotism who choose Canadian products over the others. Futhermore, local shops generally use simple ingredients in their products and avoid using harmful chemicals to increase their shelf life. This further solidifies the trust their customers have in them.

This trend is benefitial for several reasons. Firstly, this restricts money from moving out of the country. Local companies also pay tax which assists in the country's development. Additionally, when young entrepreneurs see local shops receiving support from their community, they get inspired to start their own businesses.

In conclusion, buying goods from local shops over multinational brands have several positives. In additional to supporting current businesses, it also provides a pathway for new businesses to grow in the neighborhood.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for choosing local goods, including environmental concerns, improved distribution and patriotism, and you clearly judge the trend positively. The examples about Canadian beer and local businesses make the response relevant. This meets the task well overall, but some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that local shops use simpler ingredients and avoid harmful chemicals would be stronger with a specific example or explanation of how this influences purchasing decisions. The positive effects on tax revenue and entrepreneurship are also listed briefly. To develop the response further, explain the links between each reason and consumer choice, and support the main benefits with more precise examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph evaluating the trend, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “To begin,” “Meanwhile,” “Additionally” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the reasons paragraph combines several distinct points—environmental concerns, logistics, patriotism and product ingredients—without clearly grouping or prioritising them. The reference in “This further solidifies the trust their customers have in them” is understandable, but “This” could refer more precisely to the use of simple ingredients and avoidance of chemicals. More deliberate paragraphing and clearer links between claims and examples would make the progression more flexible and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “exploit natural resources,” “logistics,” “entrepreneurs” and “multinational brands,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “competing with their European counterparts.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “deter away from buying,” “cost of transportation over the road,” and “customers fueled with patriotism” do not sound natural in context. Spelling errors such as “Futhermore” and “benefitial,” along with “In additional,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; this would make the vocabulary more precise without needing unnecessarily complex language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including participle clauses such as “making it easy for local vendors to distribute their products” and a relative clause in “beer, brewed in the mountains of Algonquin.” Most sentences are clear, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In the conclusion, “buying goods … have several positives” has a subject–verb agreement problem; the gerund phrase takes a singular verb. “Canadian beer … can be sold … competing with their European counterparts” also has an unclear agreement/reference relationship, since beer is singular while “their” points to it. Review agreement, pronoun reference and sentence construction, while continuing to use varied structures, to improve consistency.
