Student answer (Band 6.0)

Consumption of goods have drastically increased due to better economies and earning potential worldwide. Nowadays, consumers prefer purchasing locally manufactured items than investing in foreign goods. This is a postive advancement in consumption as it can empower local retailers, such money is invested in local development and citizens can benefit more rather than then buying imported products whose earnings are spent in other countires and their progress.

Local economy is the backbone of a country and its per capita growth. There are several beneficial reasons for supporting local businesses. One of the major factor is encouraging and supporting the local retailers. Imported goods are generally considered better in quality and generating wonderful results particularly in hygiene and daily essentials. This reliance on foreign products have siginificantly impacted the local businesses. For quite some time, sales of local items have reduced. Many potential businesses have closed down due to not enough earnings but high rents and utility costs that were unbearable. Consequently, increased number of lay offs and drop in employment rates.

On the brighter side, social meda awarness and knowledge have inclined consumers towards buying local products. Particularly, content creators and lifestyle influencers have highlighted advantages of local items, demostrating improved quality and outstanding results. Moreover, the money earned through sales of local goods will be invested for development of that particular country. Increased taxes and funds collected will result in more developmental projects undertaken by government to support the infrastructure, education and other important sectors.

Furthermore, previous local businesses will expand their operations and new ventures will open. In contrast to this imported goods are produced by big international brands. Their earnings will be invested in foreign lands and projects. This will have no benefit for the residents of that country instead it will benefit foreigners to improve their living standards.

In conclusion, spending money on locally manfactured goods generate a positive outlook for that country`s development, maintaing consistency and motivation of local retailers and for opening up of new local ventures.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: the essay gives reasons for choosing local goods and clearly judges the trend positively. The points about supporting retailers, keeping earnings within the country, and funding public development are relevant. The opening and conclusion also maintain a consistent position. This meets the task well, with some elements showing the fuller development expected at the next level. However, the reasons for consumers’ choices are less fully explained than the benefits to the economy: social-media influence is mentioned, but the essay does not explore why consumers respond to it or provide a specific example. The claim that imported goods are generally better in quality is also introduced without being connected clearly to the reasons for the trend. Develop these points with explanation or an example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, paragraphs on local businesses and consumer awareness, a further comparison with imports, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument. At times, however, the progression is mechanical or the relationship between ideas is unclear. For example, “On the brighter side” does not clearly contrast with the preceding discussion, and the paragraph beginning “Furthermore” repeats the point about local businesses expanding before moving to foreign investment. Some references, such as “This reliance” and “Their earnings,” could be made more precise. Group related reasons and benefits more clearly, and use transitions that express the exact relationship between points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “local retailers,” “per capita growth,” “utility costs,” and “developmental projects,” which allows you to discuss economic effects. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “empower local retailers.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “better economies,” “wonderful results,” “sales … have reduced,” and “social media awareness and knowledge have inclined consumers.” Spelling errors such as “postive,” “siginificantly,” “demostrating,” and “manfactured” are noticeable and reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for precise, natural combinations—for example, explain that awareness “has encouraged” consumers—and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures with “Consequently” and a relative clause in “products whose earnings are spent in other countries.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Consumption of goods have” has subject–verb disagreement, while “This reliance … have” also needs a singular verb. In “One of the major factor,” the noun should be plural, and “spending money … generate” does not agree with its subject. There are also sentence-boundary and punctuation issues, such as the run-on opening paragraph and missing spacing after the full stop in “growth.There.” Review agreement and sentence boundaries, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
