Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many consumers have reduced the consumption of imported goods while choosing to buy more goods produced in their local area. Although this development has some drawbacks, I strongly believe this is a positive trend.

Consumers buying goods produced in their local area creates an opportunity for small businesses to grow. This will promote startup firms as well as giving an opportunity for small business owners to expand their businesses because competition from imported goods have been reduced.

Furthermore, buying goods locally increase production of these goods which promotes industrilization in the local area. Industrilization in the local area will improve manufacturing advancement thereby creating more jobs in the local area. For example, when a local producer increases sales of goods, they expand manufacturing to meet up demand of those goods, thereby requiring more human resources in meeting increased demand. This leads to an increased employment of the people living in the local area.

In addition, choosing to buy goods that are produced in the local area improves the spending power of the consumer because of reduced cost of goods produced. For example, when goods are imported, cost of importation is added to the cost of the goods sold thereby rasing the price of the product. To avoid the cost of importation, good should be manufactured in the local area.

While buying goods produced locally is a positive trend, it also has some draw backs such as reduced diversity in options of products. When good are imported, diverse products are brought into the area which inreases choices of consumers.

In conclusion, choosing to buy good that a produced in the local area over imported goods is a positive trend because it promotes small businesses to grow, improves industrilization and spending power while also reducing the choices of consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you consider the trend positive despite reduced product choice. You also give relevant reasons, including support for small businesses, local employment and lower prices, with an example explaining how increased sales can lead to hiring. This covers both the reasons and the evaluation, and the response meets the required length; 8 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. However, the reasons consumers choose local goods are mostly inferred from the benefits rather than directly explained, and the claim that local goods improve consumers’ spending power needs clearer support. The drawback is identified but only briefly developed. More balanced explanation and specific evidence would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, separate paragraphs develop benefits and a drawback, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “In addition,” and “While” help signal the relationship between points, and the example about expanding production supports the employment argument. The organisation is easy to follow, though the benefits paragraphing is somewhat list-like, with several claims added in sequence rather than connected through a sustained explanation. Some references, such as “these goods” and “those goods,” are repetitive, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction. To strengthen cohesion, use clearer links between cause and effect and develop each paragraph around one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “imported goods,” “small businesses,” “manufacturing,” “employment,” and “diversity,” so the main ideas are generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “spending power” and “manufacturing advancement.” However, the range is uneven, and several word-choice or collocation problems reduce naturalness: “meet up demand,” “an increased employment,” and “promotes industrilization” are not idiomatic or accurately formed. Spelling errors in “industrilization,” “rasing,” “draw backs,” and “inreases” are noticeable. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, “meet demand,” “increase employment,” and “industrial development” would express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “Although,” “because,” and “when.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the example about a producer expanding manufacturing is developed through a longer sentence. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and articles: “buying goods locally increase” should be “increases,” and “competition … have been reduced” should be “has been reduced.” There are also errors in plural and determiner use, as in “good should be manufactured” and “a produced in the local area.” These do not generally prevent understanding, but they make the writing less controlled. Review agreement and article use, then proofread longer sentences for accuracy.
