Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, there has been a noticable increase in the number of consumers who prefer to purchase goods produced in locally rather than imported items. This shift in consumer behaviour is driven by several factors. In my view, this trend is positive and has multiple grbenefits for both indviduals and communities. Both the reasons as well as my preference are elaborated in the ensuing write-ups.

One of the main reasons people choose local products is to support the domestic economy. By purchasing goods from local producers, consumers help small businesses thrive and create employement opportunities within their region. In addition, locally made products are often fresher and of higher quality, particularly in the case of food, because they do not require long-distance transportation or storage. Environmental concers also play a role, as importing goods generates significant carbon emissions, whereas local products have a smaller ecological footprints.

I believe this is a positive development overall. Buying local not only strengthens economy but also encourages sustainable consumption and reduces dependence on foreign markets. Moreover, it helps preserve traditional craftmanship and cultural heritage, as many local producers follow age-old production methods that reflect regional identity. Although, iported goods may offer more variety and sometimes lower prices, the long-term advantages of supporting local industies outweigh these benefits.

In conclusion, the growing preference for locally produced goods is motivated by ecomic, environmental and quality considerations. Overall, this trend is beneficial because it promotes sustainable consumption, supports local communites, and protects the environment, making it a positive development for both individuals and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response addresses both questions directly: it gives several reasons for buying local goods and clearly states that this is a positive trend. The reasons—supporting the domestic economy, product freshness and quality, and lower transport emissions—are relevant, while the discussion of cultural heritage adds another consequence. Examples such as food needing less storage help explain the points, and the conclusion reinforces the position. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain the mechanisms or provide a specific illustration: for instance, how local purchasing sustains jobs or a regional craft. Some claims, such as local goods being higher quality, are presented broadly; qualifying them would make the support more precise. Overall, the response is clear and relevant, with room for more detailed development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, an evaluation, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “In addition,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. The central position—that the trend is positive—is stated early and maintained. Some transitions feel formulaic, however, particularly “Both the reasons as well as my preference are elaborated in the ensuing write-ups,” which is an awkward signpost rather than a natural link. The reasons paragraph also groups economic, quality, and environmental points without much internal development. Use more precise links between claims and explanations, and replace stock phrases with direct transitions to make cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

There is a useful range of topic vocabulary, including “consumer behaviour,” “carbon emissions,” “sustainable consumption,” “foreign markets,” and “cultural heritage.” These choices communicate the main ideas effectively and show some awareness of formal style. However, several spelling errors—“noticable,” “employement,” “concers,” and “industies”—and word-form or collocation problems reduce accuracy. Phrases such as “produced in locally,” “strengthens economy,” and “ecological footprints” are not expressed naturally in context. The attempt to use less common language is evident, but it is not consistently controlled. Proofread spelling carefully and learn useful word partnerships as complete phrases; this would make the vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “goods that are produced…” and a concessive sentence beginning “Although…”. Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and the argument remains easy to understand. Some errors persist in sentence construction and grammatical patterns. For example, “goods produced in locally” uses an incorrect preposition pattern, while “Buying local not only strengthens economy” needs an article before “economy.” The sentence beginning “Although, imported goods…” also has faulty punctuation: the comma should not separate the conjunction from the clause, and the sentence needs a main clause after the concessive clause. Review articles, preposition patterns, and punctuation around subordinate clauses while retaining the range of structures already attempted.
