IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are produced in their local area, rather than imported goods.

Is this a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is an increase demand in purchase of locally made items due to it's cost effectiveness. In my opinion, this has a great impact on the economy as it generates revenue rather than increased expenditure on imported products.

People prefer buying their goods locally because of the proven safety and standard of the items which are usually verified by Standard organization of Nigeria (SON). For instance, locally made gas cylinder that have passed through the verified process before they are displayed in the market give consumers a sesnse of relief knowing it has been treated already

Also, items manufactured in the neighborhood are within close proximity which is reliable and provides swift availability especially in emergency cases like illness where some medications are compounded extemporaneously to alleviate unpleasant symptoms.

Generally, the revenue generated benefits the economy for example, in the Gas sector where cofferes opportunity for investment which in-time

To summarize, this has a positive effect on individuals as safety is guaranteed during consumption of the products and reliable services are offered.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both questions: you give reasons for choosing local goods, including perceived safety and nearby availability, and clearly state that the trend is positive. The examples of SON checks and medicines prepared in emergencies help make the reasons relevant. However, the economic argument is not fully explained, and the final point about investment in the gas sector breaks off before its meaning is clear. The conclusion mainly repeats the benefits rather than bringing the reasons together. The response is also 78 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop and support your ideas. Explain each reason with a fuller example and complete the unfinished point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons, and a concluding statement. This makes the main direction understandable, and transitions such as “For instance” and “To summarize” signal examples and closure. However, progression is uneven: the paragraph beginning “Generally” introduces an economic benefit but ends mid-sentence, so the reader cannot follow the point. The relationship between cost effectiveness in the introduction and the later safety and availability reasons is also not clearly developed. Use each paragraph to explain one main idea fully, connect examples explicitly to that idea, and ensure the conclusion reflects the complete discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “locally made items,” “verified,” “close proximity,” “revenue,” and “investment.” These choices communicate the subject and show some willingness to use less common terms. Some wording is inaccurate or unnatural, however: “increase demand in purchase” is awkward, “sesnse” is misspelled, and “cofferes opportunity” does not convey a clear meaning. “Reliable” is also not the most precise description of goods being nearby. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling; clearer phrasing will make your ideas more precise without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, for example the sentence explaining that local goods are nearby and available in emergencies. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “items … that have passed” after the singular “gas cylinder,” and the unfinished construction “where cofferes opportunity for investment which in-time.” The opening also has problems with article and possessive forms in “an increase demand” and “it's cost effectiveness.” Work on subject–verb agreement, articles, and completing clauses. Building accurate sentences first, then adding subordinate clauses, will help you show range more reliably.
