Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, many individuals have given up on buying imported goods and services. They encourage others to buy local products to support their economy. Many governments across the globe have introduced different campaign to reduce reliance on foreign companies and products which was largely welcomed by citizens. There are many reasons behind this development and it has brought positive results.

To begin with, the first and foremost reason to buy local goods is to support government's initiative. Governments in many countries such as India and Canada have started campaign to promote local items. Therefore, citizens have started to avoid spending on foreign goods to support local business owner in the hope to improve economy. For instance, Canadian government has recently launched a campaign called Made in Canada where public authorities have asked citizens to buy only Canadian products. Furthermore, Prices of foreign goods are usually higher than a local products because of additional transportation cost and government duties which increases the final prices of the products. As a result, in some cases, products would become unaffordable.

This approach has shown positive result in the society. Local business owner have started to make more money and as a result, they were able to hire more people in their industry. For instance, when local people started to buy local products, it increases their sell and to expand their service, they need more people in their company which increase the employment opportunities.

To sum up, buying local products is the best approach to support local businesses. Foreign goods often have better quality, although they are very expensive. In some cases, people would buy local products to show their love and respect to their own country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and maintain a clear positive view, especially by explaining that buying locally can support businesses and create jobs. The examples of government campaigns in India and Canada help make the reasons relevant, and the point about transport costs and duties adds a second explanation. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully developed: the Canadian campaign example does not explain how it demonstrates the wider trend, and the employment point repeats the link between increased sales and hiring without exploring its effects. The conclusion introduces quality and national pride, but these points are not developed in the main discussion. To strengthen the response, explain each reason more fully and connect the conclusion closely to the arguments already presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on positive effects, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “To sum up” make the progression easy to follow. However, some linking is mechanical, and the first body paragraph combines government campaigns, consumer support, and prices without clearly showing how these points relate. The phrase “This approach” at the start of the next paragraph is also broad, so its reference is not entirely precise. The conclusion adds new ideas about quality and patriotism rather than drawing together the main points. Use clearer links between each reason and its consequence, and make the final paragraph summarise the argument rather than introduce additional claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “imported goods,” “reliance,” “transportation cost,” and “employment opportunities,” which allows you to discuss the issue clearly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “support local businesses.” However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “given up on buying” suggests consumers have stopped buying altogether, while “increase their sell” is not a natural expression. Repetition of “local products” and “local goods” also limits flexibility. Some forms are inaccurate, including “campaign” where a plural is needed and “business owner” when referring to businesses generally. Build a wider set of natural collocations for trade and employment, and check word forms and singular/plural choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which was largely welcomed by citizens” and a cause-and-effect structure beginning “because of additional transportation cost.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “different campaign” needs a plural form, and “a local products” has an article–number mismatch. In “it increases their sell … which increase the employment opportunities,” the verb forms do not agree consistently with the surrounding past-time account. There are also some punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as capitalising “Prices” mid-sentence. Review agreement and article use, and keep verb tense consistent when describing past examples or general effects.
