Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to request a departmental change in order to have a better future. Although I have no problem with my current position but moving toward project management department would be great for me.

Being a sales representative I have expertise my communication and areas of building relationships. Moreover, I am quite knowledgeable about my area, as a result I attract plenty of clients.

As you know I recently completed my course in Project Management and shifting me towards same area could help me to be more productive for the company where I can show my skills better. Additionally, the excellence I have in computer would allow me to manager big project properly that will help company economically by saving time and money both.

The main factor of not moving to another company is the relationship with all the team member and even my boss is always stands by whenever I need. I would say my soul is connected to this company, therefore leaving the is not a good option for me.

It would be appreciated if you could take these requests into consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Guri

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly stated what you learned in your current role, explained the benefits of your transfer to the company, and provided reasons for wanting to stay. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, the explanation of how your computer skills would save the company money is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully supported with specific details or examples. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused on the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'therefore' to connect your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors in referencing and sentence structure, such as 'leaving the is not a good option'. The transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the argument. While the structure is generally sound, more varied and precise linking words would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'departmental change', 'productive', and 'expertise'. There are some instances of awkward phrasing or word choice, such as 'expertise my communication' (should be 'expertise in my communication') and 'my soul is connected to this company', which sounds slightly unnatural in a professional context. You attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to project management, which is positive. To improve, focus on collocations and ensuring that your word choices are consistently appropriate for a formal business letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I have no problem with my current position but moving...' (missing punctuation/conjunction issues) and 'my boss is always stands by' (incorrect verb form). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'shifting me towards same area'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
