Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. John,
Hope you are doing well, I am writing this letter about moving to a different department in our company because I feel that it is necessary for my career development.
Currently, I am working as a CT scan technologist. Since the beginning of my career, I was able to learn about every dimension of a CT scanner and follow the radiation safety protocols for the safety of myself and for the patients. Now I feel that I have to improve my skills in other modalities.
I would like to move to the OT department because I wanted to operate the C-arm machine. Since I have experience in handling of C-arm machine in my previous work, I could be a worthy replacement. Additionally, i have a diploma certificate in principles of C-arm equipment.
I heard that ABC hospital have vacancies for this posting, I would still like to continue my career in our hospital, since I am familiar with our hospital's protocols and the infrastructure.
I am looking forward for a positive reply.
Yours faithfully,
Srihari Devaraju

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state what you have learned in your current role, explain the benefits of your transfer to the OT department, and provide a valid reason for wanting to stay within the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could further develop the 'benefits to the company' section by explicitly linking your previous experience with the C-arm machine to increased efficiency or patient throughput in the new department, rather than just stating you would be a 'worthy replacement'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Currently', 'Additionally', and 'Since', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the connection between your current skills and the new role is more tightly integrated to enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'CT scan technologist', 'radiation safety protocols', and 'modalities'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'diploma certificate' (which is slightly redundant) and 'vacancies for this posting' (which is a bit awkward). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more varied collocations and professional terminology would elevate the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I heard that ABC hospital have vacancies' (subject-verb agreement: 'has'), 'I wanted to operate' (tense inconsistency: should be 'want'), and 'I am looking forward for' (preposition error: 'to'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy. You have a good grasp of basic sentence structure, but more attention to detail is needed.
