Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Wu,
I hope you're doing well. I'm writing to express my strong intention to work as a manager in your restaurant. After working as a kitchen manager for two years, I believe I'm ready to take the responsibilities of being a restaurant manager.
Working as my current role, I learned to manage food related issues such as standards, hygienes, and costs. After getting food safety certification, I strictly followed the food protocols and I made sure foods are fresh, areas are kept clean. Additionally, I was able to keep food cost consistently at around 30% by controlling the waste, and keeping the order level at optimum level. Apart from food, I also assisted manager for staff related issues such as screening, interviews, and boarding processes. I personally helped the team to keep the employee turnover very low. Also, I handled the grievance related to food and services during the absense of the manager.
To mention, I recently completed my masters degree in business administration specialized in restaurant management. I genuinely hope my degree and hands-on experience will allow to use my potentials fully and contribute to become more profitable.
Finally, I wish to continue my career with this company as I am very passionate about the food industry. Moreover, I am planning to live in this city for more yeas as all my family members are living here.
I hope you will evaluate and give me a chance to prove my quality.
Yours sincerely,
Adam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outlined your learning in the kitchen, explained the benefits of your transfer (such as your MBA and hands-on experience), and provided a valid reason for staying with the company. The tone is professional and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your current skills and the specific needs of the new department is even more explicit, as the transition from kitchen manager to restaurant manager is a significant shift that could be further justified.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct requirement of the task. You use transition words such as 'Additionally,' 'Apart from,' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your experience, your qualifications, and your future intentions. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the sentence transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow, which is essential for a formal request letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary related to the hospitality industry, such as 'food protocols,' 'employee turnover,' and 'grievance.' There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'boarding processes' (likely meaning 'onboarding') and 'absense' (spelling error). You also use 'potentials' in the plural, which is less common in this context. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy for professional terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Working as my current role' (should be 'In my current role') and 'contribute to become more profitable' (should be 'contribute to the company becoming more profitable'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'assisted manager' (missing 'the') and 'more yeas' (spelling). Despite these, your meaning is never in doubt, and the errors do not impede communication.
