IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. John,

I am writing this letter in regards to propose a transition of my job role from a design to the development team.

I have learnt all the design tools, and how to do frontend coding for any web page. Also, I gained experience in Javascript and Jquery which are essential skills for any developer. As you must be aware about that we have only two senior coders who work on our existing project, therefore, it becomes challenging sometimes to complete tasks within a deadline. If I will shift to a development department, I would be able to handle all the errors in the coding which will make the process fast, and company does not need to hire more applicant.

As I have been working with this organization for the last 2 years, I feel more comfortable with all my team mates and do not prefer to move in other company.

I hope you will consider my request and take some appropraite action on this. I look forward to hear back from you.

Yours sincerely,

Muskan Garg

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly state what you have learned, explain the benefits to the company, and express your commitment to the organization. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how the company benefits could be more detailed to fully persuade the reader. While the task is addressed, the arguments are relatively straightforward and could benefit from more professional elaboration to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'therefore', and 'As I have been working', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transition', 'development', and 'organization'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'in regards to propose' (should be 'in regard to proposing') and 'move in other company' (should be 'move to another company'). While you successfully communicate your message, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the precision or 'less common' items that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on collocations and more formal professional terminology would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If I will shift... I would be able to'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including 'As you must be aware about that' (unnecessary 'about'), 'If I will shift' (should be 'If I shift'), and 'look forward to hear' (should be 'look forward to hearing'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct usage of prepositions and gerunds.
