Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Nancy,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to move me to a different department in our company.

As you know, I am working in this restaurant as a server from almost two years now. I have gained valuable experience and developed skills such as customer interaction, conflict resolution, resource management and others. These skills would be very useful for me in the future.

Therefore, kindly move me to the supervisory department because in my perspective I would be a perfect fit for this role. I have knowledge about company policies, mission and values. I have developed meaningful connections with the staff and our regular clients. I know what are company’s expectations from us, and will try my best to work on them. Therefore, in my perspective, I would be an asset for the company.

I would like to serve our company for the long term. As the management team is very helpful and knowledgeable. The working conditions are great. Honestly, I enjoy working for our company.

I hope you will accept my request.

Yours sincerely,

Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly state what you have learned, explain the benefits of your transfer, and express your commitment to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention 'customer interaction' and 'conflict resolution', providing a specific example of a situation where you applied these skills would have strengthened your argument. The suggestion for the supervisory role is clear, but could be more persuasive by linking your current skills more directly to the specific requirements of the new department. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'As', and 'However', which help connect ideas. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition between your skills and the request for a new role is a bit abrupt. Using more sophisticated cohesive devices would help the flow of the letter feel more natural and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'valuable experience', 'conflict resolution', and 'asset'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for a professional context. However, there are some repetitive structures and slightly simplistic word choices, such as 'I know what are company’s expectations' (which should be 'I know what the company's expectations are'). To reach a higher band, incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary related to career development and workplace dynamics. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am working in this restaurant... from almost two years now' (should be 'have been working... for almost two years') and 'in my perspective' (a more natural phrasing would be 'in my opinion' or 'from my perspective'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering verb tenses, particularly the present perfect continuous for duration, and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout your writing.
