Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear manager,

I am writing to express my interest in transferring to a different department within the company. Having worked in my current position for past two years, I believe that taking on a new role would help me continue developing my skills and contribute effectively to the organization.

During my time in my current department, I have gained valuable experience in managing daily operations, communicating with clients, and working closely with colleagues to meet deadlines. I have also improved my problem-solving abilities, learned how to handle challenging situations professionally, and developed a strong understanding of the company's policies and values.

I believe the company would benefit from moving me to another department because I can bring the knowledge and experience I have gained to a new team. As I have been already working within the organization, it would be quick for me to adapt new responsibilities. It can also be help to improve cooperation between departments and increase overall efficiency.

Although I am looking for a new challenge, I have no desire to leave the company. I have always enjoyed working here because of the supportive working environment, excellent opportunities for professional growth, and the positive relationships I have built with my colleagues. I am confident that continuing my career within this organization is the best way to achieve my long-term goals while contributing to the company's success.

Thank you for considering my request. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this matter with you at your convenience.

Yours sincerely,

John carter

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline the skills learned in your current role, provide a logical justification for how the company would benefit from your transfer, and express your commitment to the organization. The tone is professional and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a professional closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'During my time', 'As I have been', and 'Although' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the progression from your current situation to your future goals is coherent and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'contribute effectively', 'valuable experience', and 'professional growth'. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or nuanced professional terminology. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the language used is consistently appropriate for the formal tone required in a business letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter displays a good variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences like 'Although I am looking for a new challenge, I have no desire to leave the company.' Grammar is generally accurate, though there are minor slips, such as 'It can also be help to improve' (should be 'It can also help to improve') and 'adapt new responsibilities' (should be 'adapt to new responsibilities'). These are minor and do not interfere with the clarity of your message. The majority of your sentences are error-free.
