Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well.
I am writing to request you about my transfer into HR department for my career development.
First and foremost, my current role as a customer service representative taught me several skills, such as communication, interpersonal skills, time management, and many more. Not only this, but I have also learned how to tackle difficult situations in a calm way with appropriate solutions from my colleagues.
However, moving to the HR department as a recruiter would be beneficial for me to improve my public speaking skills. In addition, with the help of this new position, I can learn how to recruit good talents in the community, as I would like to gain experience working in fast-paced environment.
Lastly, I do not wish to leave the company, as it provides me a lot of opportunities, which enhanced my skills. Also, the work environment in our company is friendly and helpful; therefore, I always get motivated and it also reduces my stress while working.
I hope you will accept my request.
I will wait for your prompt reply.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Dhruvi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline the skills gained in your current role, explain the benefits of a transfer to the HR department, and provide valid reasons for wanting to stay within the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To improve, ensure that the connection between your current skills and the new role is more explicitly linked; for instance, you could explain how your existing 'interpersonal skills' would specifically assist in the recruitment process, rather than just mentioning public speaking.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost,' 'In addition,' and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural, rather than relying on standard list-like connectors at the start of every paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'interpersonal skills,' 'fast-paced environment,' and 'tackle difficult situations.' There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'request you about my transfer,' which should be 'request a transfer' or 'ask you about transferring.' Additionally, 'recruit good talents' is slightly unnatural; 'recruit top talent' or 'attract high-quality candidates' would be more precise. Expanding your range of professional collocations will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'it provides me a lot of opportunities,' where 'offers' might be more appropriate, and 'in HR department,' which requires the definite article 'the.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and your control over sentence structure is sufficient to ensure that communication is never impeded. To improve, focus on refining article usage and subject-verb agreement in more complex sentences.
