Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to request a transfer to another department within the same organisation in order to pursue better opportunities for career growth and professional development.
I have been working for your company for the past two years, and during this time, I have gained valuable experience and developed a range of important skills, including time management, forward planning, teamwork, cooperation, patience, and professionalism. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to my colleagues for their support and cooperation during my training period.
Last month, I completed my postgraduate degree from a well-regarded university, where I acquired several new skills and enhanced my professional knowledge. I am now keen to apply these skills in my work and take on responsibilities that are more closely related to my educational background. I am confident that my experience, qualifications, and skills would enable me to make a positive contribution to the organisation and its future success.
I am also emotionally attached to this organisation and would like to continue building my career here. One of the aspects I value most about the company is its supportive working culture, along with the benefits provided to employees.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could consider my request for a departmental transfer. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Prarthana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have fully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly outlined the skills learned in your current role, provided a logical justification for how the company would benefit from your transfer by linking your new qualifications to potential contributions, and explained your desire to remain with the company. The tone is professional and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully maintained a consistent, formal register throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'during this time', 'in order to', and 'along with'. The transition between your current experience and your future goals is smooth. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion. The overall structure is coherent and supports the reader's understanding of your request.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases such as 'pursue better opportunities', 'sincere appreciation', and 'well-regarded university' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to the formal tone of the letter. While the language is natural and fits the context well, there is room to incorporate slightly more sophisticated or idiomatic business collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally without any errors in word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of relative clauses ('where I acquired...') and compound sentences. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. The sentences are error-free, which demonstrates a strong command of English grammar. The structure is varied enough to maintain interest and clarity, and the formal tone is consistently supported by your grammatical choices.
