Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in moving a different department within the company. After working in my current position for the past two years, i believe that a new role would provide me with valuable opportunities and professional growth.
During my time in my present department, i have developed strong communication, teamwork, time management and problem solving skills. I have also learned how to handle responsibilities independently, meet deadlines and work effectively with colleagues and customers
I believe that transferring to another department would benefit the company as well. I would be able to apply the skills and experience I have gained over the past two years while learning new procedures and taking on additional responsibilities. My knowledge of the company's polices and work environment allow me to adapt quickly and work effectively to the new team.
Although I am interested in career development, i do not wish to leave the company because i value the skills and supportive environment i have received here. I would prefer to continue growing professionally within the organization and contribute to its future success.
I would be grateful if you could consider my request and discuss any suitable opportunities for me.
Yours sincerely,
Rajwinder kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the skills learned in your current role, explain the benefits of your transfer to the company, and provide a convincing reason for wanting to stay within the organization. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of the 'new procedures' or 'additional responsibilities' you hope to undertake, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more proactive approach to your career development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a professional closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'During my time', 'Although', and 'In addition', which help the flow of information. However, the progression could be even smoother with a wider variety of linking words. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, but the overall structure is easy to follow and the message is coherent throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'professional growth', 'work effectively', and 'contribute to its future success' are well-chosen for the context. There is some repetition of basic words, and you could improve by incorporating more precise collocations. For instance, instead of saying 'moving a different department', you could use 'transferring to a different department'. The vocabulary is functional and appropriate for a formal letter, though it lacks the sophistication of less common lexical items that would push the score into the 8.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are consistent minor errors, particularly with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I') and a missing preposition in the first sentence ('moving to a different department'). Additionally, there is a minor error in 'company's polices' (should be 'policies') and 'work effectively to the new team' (should be 'with'). Despite these slips, your meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally reliable.
