Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Brown,
I am presently working in the quality control domain of the company and have gained about a couple of years on the role. However, I wish to transfer to the research department, where I believe, I can contribute through my learnings and various experiences.
in the past two years, I have learned the importance of maintaining quality, without compromising on the quantity of samples processed per day at our industrial premises.
I carry a deep fascination towards the research sector, and also hold a tremendous understanding of further testing and analyzing, beyond the quality stage. My proven track records of producing accurate results can certainly speak for itself as to how I can aid the company in meeting deadlines.
I love the company's ability to understand every employee and encourage them to become the best versions of themselves. I definitely do not wish to leave the company at any point.
I am looking forward to discuss with you on this matter, according to your convenience.
Kind regards,
Jone

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your current experience in quality control, explain the benefits of your transfer to research, and express your commitment to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more fully developed. For instance, while you mention your 'proven track records,' providing a specific example of a project or a particular skill you mastered would make your argument more persuasive and better developed, rather than just stating that you have the skills.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'In the past two years,' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'industrial premises,' 'maintaining quality,' and 'career development.' There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'gained about a couple of years on the role,' which sounds slightly unnatural; 'spent two years in this role' would be more standard. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, which is good, but ensure that these words are used in the correct context to avoid slight inaccuracies. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as the unnecessary comma in 'where I believe, I can contribute' and the capitalization error in 'in the past two years.' Additionally, 'I am looking forward to discuss' should be 'I am looking forward to discussing.' These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the writing from being considered error-free. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures and punctuation will help improve your score in this criterion.
