You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manger,

I am writing this letter to request an opportunity to move to a different department within the company, as I believe this would be an important step in my career development.

I have been working in my current department for the past two years, during which I have gained valuable experience in quality control, problem-solving skills and working with different cross-functional team. I have also developed a good understanding of company's procedures and standards. These skills have helped me become more confident and responsible in my role.

I believe that transferring to another department would benefit the company because I could use my existing knowledge while learning new skills and taking different responsibilities. In addition, my experience with the company would allow me to adapt quickly and effectively without requiring extensive training.

However, I do not wish to leave the company because I value the supportive working environment and the opportunities I have received here. I would like to continue developing my career within the organisation and contribute to its future success.

Thank you for considering my request in an advance.

Yours sincerely,

Divya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline your experience in quality control and problem-solving, explain the mutual benefits of a transfer, and express your loyalty to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of the 'new skills' you hope to acquire or elaborate slightly more on how your specific background would solve problems in a new department, which would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'However,' and 'during which' effectively to link your thoughts. The structure is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow of information is natural, making the letter easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'cross-functional team,' 'procedures and standards,' and 'organisation.' There are a few minor slips, such as 'Manger' (a spelling error in the salutation) and 'in an advance' (which should be 'in advance'). Despite these, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey your message clearly. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic business expressions to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free and clear. There are a few minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'working with different cross-functional team' (should be plural 'teams') and 'understanding of company's procedures' (missing the article 'the'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, supporting a professional tone.
