Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Alexandre,
I am writing to bring to your attention that I have been employed in this company for two years and to request your assistance in promoting me to a different department in order to develop my career.
I have been working in a chemical department for two years and have developed multiple skills including analytical and advanced research. At present, I am fully trained on several SOPs, high resolution microscopes, several coating formulations and handling all chemicals. Additionally, I also supervise junior colleagues in their projects.
The company has always been very supportive throughout my employment and therefore I hope it would assist me in moving from a chemical department to a production department. There has been a vacancy in a production department for a long time and I am a perfect fit. I can help production team to achieve all its goals before deadline. Not only production, I will also be able to help QC scientists sometimes. This will benefit company with someone who has extensive experience and can assist in both the labs.
Although, there are many other opportunities currently available, I would want to stay in the same company because of it's multiple opportunities and flexibility of working.
Thank you for your time and considering my application. I look forward to your approval.
Yours faithfully,
Ashu Berwal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your current skills, explained the benefits of your transfer to the production department, and provided a valid reason for wanting to remain with the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of how your current skills (such as SOP training) would directly translate to the production department's specific needs, rather than stating generally that you are a 'perfect fit'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Although', which help link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is always precise. For instance, the transition between your current skills and the benefits to the company could be smoother to create a more cohesive narrative.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, using industry-relevant terms like 'analytical', 'research', 'SOPs', and 'formulations'. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'help production team' (should be 'help the production team') and 'benefit company' (should be 'benefit the company'). Expanding your range of collocations and using more precise professional terminology would improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'it's multiple opportunities' (should be 'its' without the apostrophe) and 'help production team' (missing articles). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'I hope it would assist me', where 'I hope you would consider assisting me' would be more natural. Despite these errors, your meaning is never obscured, and you maintain a good level of control over your writing.
