Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Alex
I am writing to express my interest in moving to different department to develop my career within the Alpha Labs.
I have been working as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant with chemistry department for the past two years. This role is a great fit for me because I thrive on hands-on work, which involves handling diverse specimens. Furthermore, I have learned how to process blood specimens on different equipment. I feel more confident to work independently and to take on more responsibilities. Therefore, I would like to work in Microbiology department not only to boost my knowledge but also enhance my working skills. This new opportunity will also allow me to learn new techniques and laboratory procedures. I ensure to contribute substantially for the company growth and overall success. Lastly, I am not particularly keen on leaving the company because of professional working environment and employee support I receive from the organisation.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me the details at your earliest convenience. Please let me know if you require any additional information from me. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your current experience as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant, explain the benefits of your transfer to the Microbiology department, and provide a convincing reason for wanting to stay within the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning how the company would benefit, you could provide a more specific example of how your current skills in blood processing would translate into value for the Microbiology team.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'Lastly' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between your current role and the desired role is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure makes the purpose of your letter easy to follow for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'thrive on hands-on work' and 'earliest convenience' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal context. There are some minor issues with word choice and articles, such as 'moving to different department' (should be 'a different department') and 'contribute substantially for the company growth' (should be 'to the company's growth'). These errors do not impede communication, but more precise collocations would enhance the professional tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('in Microbiology department') and minor prepositional errors ('contribute... for'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though ensure consistency in your salutations and sign-offs. To improve, focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement to ensure that your complex sentences remain error-free, which would help you move into the higher band range.
