Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to express my interest in moving to a different department within the company, as I believe this would be an important step for career development.

For the last two years, I have been working as a supervisor in your company. During my work I have gained coordination, problem-solving, and how to deal with production issues and workplace safety.

I believe that the company would benefit from my existing experience if they transferred me to another department because I know the work procedure of the company. Moreover, I can easily adopt the new environment.

I would like to remain in this company for a long time because of the supportive environment and opportunities. Also, I have built strong relations with my colleagues. This is the main reason I want to stay in this company for upcoming years.

I would appreciate this opportunity

Your sincerly,

Kawal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: skills learned, benefits to the company, and reasons for staying. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall development of ideas. While the points are relevant, they are somewhat brief and lack depth. For example, the explanation of how the company would benefit is quite general. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on your specific contributions and provide more detailed reasoning for your request. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'I believe', 'I would'). While the paragraphing is sufficient, the transition between ideas could be smoother. The use of linking words like 'Moreover' and 'Also' is functional but basic. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect your sentences and paragraphs more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'career development', 'production issues', and 'workplace safety'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I can easily adopt the new environment' (should be 'adapt to') and 'Your sincerly' (spelling error). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'gained coordination, problem-solving, and how to deal with' is grammatically inconsistent, as you are mixing nouns with a clause. There are also minor punctuation and spelling errors, such as 'Your sincerly'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring parallel structure in lists and proofreading for basic spelling and verb-preposition combinations.
