Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Aaron,

I am writing this letter to inform you about my wish to transfer to the Ads Team within our company.

I started working here two years ago and I believe my career development have been tremendous under your leadership. I was assigned good projects which moved business metrics and gave me a lot of visibility. I also got to network a lot while working on the cross-team projects.

That's when I realized that moving to the Ads team will benefit both me and the company. I had experience in working with the client-facing products before I joined this company. Since Ads team is another such department, I believe I can utilize a lot of my experience there.

This company has truly been one of the best I have ever come across in my entire career. It gave me opportunity to learn, a winner mindset, teams with exceptional skillset and lifelong friends. Hence I would love to continue working here.

I hope you understand my decision. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Saneha Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state what you have learned, explain the benefits of your transfer to the company, and express your commitment to staying within the organization. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of the 'business metrics' you moved or the 'exceptional skillset' you possess to further develop your ideas and demonstrate your value to the new department more persuasively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a professional closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Hence' and 'Since', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between your current achievements and the request to move could be smoother to better highlight the logical progression of your career development.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms such as 'career development', 'cross-team projects', and 'client-facing products'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations or sophisticated professional terminology. For example, instead of saying 'moved business metrics', you could use 'contributed to significant business growth' or 'enhanced operational efficiency'. The current vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the nuance and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are a few grammatical slips that slightly affect accuracy. For example, you wrote 'my career development have been', which should be 'has been' to agree with the singular subject. Additionally, 'Ads team is another such department' would be more natural as 'As the Ads team is a similar department'. Despite these minor errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help improve this score.
