Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I would like to relocate to other department within in the same company, if possible.
As you are aware that since past two years, I have been working as a front-desk manager in your company. I must say that I have enjoyed serving as front-desk manager immensely as this has increased my confidence due to interaction with clients. Additionally, it also improved my hold on English as most of your clients are international. Moreover, I have also learned about clients future expectations from our company through regular interactions with them.
Considering all that I have learned being as a font-desk manager, I would like to move on as a sales manager. This is because I strongly believe that I would be able to bring growth to the product sales of company as I am now aware of need of each clients independently. The front-desk manager position gave me an opportunity to observe the clients and their future requirements.
I would also like to point out here that I wish to continue in this company itself, as I have adjusted well within the company environment, also I find the staff very caring and helping. This is the rare qualities found in any company today. Therefore, I would like to continue here only.
Hope to get a positive reply.
Regards,
Shelley

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain what you have learned as a front-desk manager, suggest how your transition to sales would benefit the company, and provide reasons for wanting to stay within the organization. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your current skills and the new role is more explicitly detailed; for instance, you mention understanding client expectations, but could elaborate on how this specific knowledge would directly translate into increased sales figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your current role and the desire to move to sales could be more fluidly integrated to improve the overall progression of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'immensely', 'international', and 'future expectations' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'relocate to other department' (should be 'another department') and 'need of each clients' (should be 'needs of each client'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered flexible or precise enough for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'since past two years' (should be 'for the past two years'), 'being as a font-desk manager' (should be 'as a front-desk manager'), and 'This is the rare qualities' (should be 'These are rare qualities'). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
