Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Shah,
I am writing to formally request your assistance regarding changing my position into a different department in the same company.
To begin with, I have joined this company as a web tester and currently I am leading the team. Also, I have successfully tested 200 websites in the last two years and received best employee of the year award.
It would be incredibly grateful if you could give me a role as a developer. Recently, I successfully completed the Google Developer's Course that will directly help me for the new role. Plus, I have enough experience in this company so I know the basic fundamentals of the company that can make our work easy and smooth.
Regarding staying in this company, I have spent two years and feels that this company has an excellent employees that help each other everyday; hence, it is a tough decision to leave the company for better opportunities.
I hope you will consider my request favorably, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outlined your experience as a web tester, explained the benefits of your transition to a developer role, and expressed your commitment to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of your ideas could be more sophisticated. For instance, while you mention the Google Developer's Course, explaining how your specific skills as a tester would complement your new role as a developer would have strengthened your argument further. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Also', and 'Regarding' to guide the reader through your points. While the structure is sound, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. The progression of ideas is logical and consistent throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'formally request', 'fundamentals', and 'consider my request favorably'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I have joined this company' should be 'I joined this company' (past simple), and 'it would be incredibly grateful' is grammatically incorrect; you should say 'I would be incredibly grateful'. Additionally, 'excellent employees that help each other' is slightly informal. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise professional terminology would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I have joined' instead of 'I joined', 'feels that this company has an excellent employees' (subject-verb agreement and article usage errors), and 'help me for the new role' (preposition error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
