Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this letter to express my intent to move to consulting department from the sales. In my tenure of two years, I got promoted from junior sales associate to senior sales associate. During this period, I acquired several essential marketing skills like developing relationships, targeting the audience, pitching the product, and delivering exceptional customer service. Overall, I enjoyed working thoroughly.
Now, I would like to move to the consulting department, and I believe that this will be beneficial for the firm as well because, I have been trained under expert consultants of the firm, and possess enough experience to tackle complex client relationships. Moreover, I have earned a diploma in Human Resources, by which I have learned the consultation factors and approaches.
I do not plan to resign from the company as I enjoy the work-life balance and staff environment here. Also, I wish to work longer due to the support and guidance I receive always from my peers.
Yours sincerely,
James Anderson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline your achievements in the sales department, explain the benefits of your transfer to consulting, and provide valid reasons for wanting to stay with the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific 'consultation factors' you learned, as the current explanation is a bit brief. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Also' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the first and second paragraph could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally rather than just at the start of sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'tenure of two years', 'exceptional customer service', and 'tackle complex client relationships' are well-chosen and appropriate for a professional context. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'consulting department from the sales' (should be 'from the sales department') and 'consultation factors', which sounds slightly unnatural. Expanding your range of collocations related to career development would help elevate the score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to express my intent...' and 'I believe that this will be beneficial...'. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'by which I have learned the consultation factors' and 'I enjoy the work-life balance and staff environment here'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentence structures are slightly repetitive. Increasing the variety of complex sentence forms would improve your control and accuracy.
