IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Richard,

I am writing to express my interest for the role of a Software Analyst in the Financial department that has been recently posted on the company's website.

Over the past two years, I have learned gained a lot of work experience as a junior developer. Under your guidance, I was able to resolve complex bug problems that the team had faced while developing a major App for the company.

I am confident that I will be suitable candidate for this position, as I am aware of the company's policies and its rules and regulations. Apart from that I have been able to maintain good relations with the senior managers from all the departments and have been able to understand the departments needs and their roles and responsibilities. By transferring me to this department, I will be able to fill the gap that the company is looking for, which will help in the company's growth.

At this point, I do not wish to leave the company, as I think there is still more to learn from the other departments. Additionally, the benefits and work from home facility provided by the firm is amazing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly stated your experience as a junior developer, explained the benefits of your transfer to the company, and provided reasons for wanting to stay. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of your ideas could be more specific. For example, when mentioning the 'benefits' of the company, you could have linked these more explicitly to your career development goals rather than just mentioning the 'work from home' facility. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that' and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. While the progression of ideas is clear, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'career development', 'resolve complex bug problems', and 'roles and responsibilities'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'learned gained' (a redundancy) and 'departments needs' (missing an apostrophe). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am confident that I will be a suitable candidate... as I am aware of...'. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'interest for the role' (should be 'interest in'), 'suitable candidate' (missing an article), and 'departments needs' (missing possessive punctuation). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control.
