Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my interest in getting transferred to another department in the company. The purpose of this letter is to request an 1:1 career development discussion.
To give you some background, I have been working as Cashier in Front- End since 2 years. I have learned to achieve different task such as enhanced communication skills, build good relationship with both colleagues and customers, learned computerized skills and many more. Unfortunately, doing similar task almost every single day significantly dropped my learning skills. This has caused considerable inconvenience because I feel overwhelmed and less interested in my work.
Furthermore, I would like to highlight that Customer Service Manager position is open in our company. I have already applied for the position via colleague portal and department has accepted my application for training .
Under these circumstances, I would really appreciate if you could keep me as cross-trained employee in front-end department. Additionally, it would be helpful as I really enjoy the workplace environment , benefits and perks.
I look forward hearing from you.
Thank you
Samreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly stated what you learned (communication and computer skills), suggested a benefit to the company (cross-training), and explained why you want to stay (workplace environment and benefits). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why you want to move is slightly contradictory, as you mention feeling 'overwhelmed' by your current tasks but then suggest staying as a 'cross-trained employee'. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments are more logically connected and fully expanded to demonstrate a clear professional rationale for the transfer.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your intent. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between your current skills and your dissatisfaction with the role is a bit abrupt. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentence structures could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, including professional terms like 'career development', 'cross-trained', and 'workplace environment'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'achieve different task' (should be 'perform different tasks') and 'dropped my learning skills' (which is not a standard collocation). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To improve, try to use more natural collocations and avoid repeating simple verbs like 'learned' or 'doing'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'since 2 years' (should be 'for 2 years'), 'achieve different task' (pluralization error), and 'look forward hearing' (should be 'look forward to hearing'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around colons and commas. To reach a higher band, focus on correcting these recurring errors in tense and preposition usage, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
