Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. James,
I am writing to address my interest in moving to maintenance department for my career development.
I have been working as a machine operator in Erie Meats for last two year. In this role, I have learned a lot about operation and maintenance of the equipments but there are less future opportunities in this department when compared with maintenance department.
As there has already been a shortage of Millwrite professionals in our company, I would like to take this opportunity to move to the maintenance department. This move will help our organization as well as my personal career development.
When I first joined this company, I was unaware of all the mechanical operations of the equipment but with the help of the amazing support we have in our team, I was able to master the operations. This corporation has helped me build my career and I am connected to it emotionally as well.
I hope you will understand my situation. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Anjal Katoch

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state what you have learned as a machine operator, explain the benefit to the company regarding the shortage of Millwright professionals, and express your loyalty to the organization. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific skills you have acquired in your current role to better demonstrate your readiness for the new department. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused on the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As there has already been' and 'When I first joined', to link ideas. However, the transitions between some sentences could be smoother to improve the flow. For instance, the jump from discussing the maintenance department to your personal history could be bridged with a more explicit linking phrase. Paragraphing is used correctly throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'career development', 'organization', and 'mechanical operations'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'equipments' (which is an uncountable noun) and 'Millwrite' (which should be spelled 'Millwright'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on collocations and ensuring correct pluralization of uncountable nouns will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'When I first joined this company, I was unaware of all the mechanical operations...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'for last two year' (should be 'for the last two years') and 'moving to maintenance department' (missing the article 'the'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and subject-verb agreement. The majority of your sentences are clear and functional for a professional context.
