Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing to discuss the possibility of moving to a different department within the company, as I believe this would be an important step in my career development.

During the past two years in my current position, I have gained valuable experience in dealing with customers, managing daily tasks and working effectively as part of a team. I have also developed strong communication and organisational skills, which I believe could be useful in another department.

I feel that transferring me to the marketing department, for example, would benefit the company as I could apply my existing knowledge while developing new skills. My experience with customers would also help me understand their needs and contribute to creating effective marketing strategies. In addition, I would be able to bring a fresh perspective to the team.

Although I am interested in taking on new responsibilities, I have no desire to leave the company. I have greatly enjoyed working here and appreciate the supportive environment and opportunities I have been given. I would therefore prefer to develop my career within the organisation.

I would be grateful if you could consider my request.

Kind regards,

Gurpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your current experience, provided a logical justification for how the company would benefit from your transfer, and explained your commitment to the organization. The tone is professional and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the opening paragraph. You have maintained a consistent and professional position throughout the response, ensuring all requirements of the task are met effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You have used cohesive devices such as 'During the past two years', 'In addition', and 'Although' effectively to link your thoughts. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure follows a standard formal letter format, which makes the information easy to follow. The flow of the argument is consistent and logical from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'valuable experience', 'organisational skills', and 'fresh perspective'. The word choice is precise and natural throughout the letter. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it stays within a standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or nuanced professional terminology, but the current range is more than sufficient for this task and demonstrates a good level of control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if you could consider' and complex sentences involving subordinate clauses like 'as I believe this would be...'. There are no noticeable grammatical errors, and your punctuation is used correctly throughout. The control over sentence structure is consistent, and the writing is error-free, which demonstrates a strong command of English grammar suitable for professional correspondence.
