Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to change my current department which is a finance to move to an AI .
In my current job, I have learned lots of things like working under pressure, meeting strong deadlines, arranging and attending meetings. Moreover, I have gain the profound knowledge of the finance too.
However, from past couple of years as we can see the usage of artificial intelligence has increased a lot. And I have been learning it from last 2 years and worked on many personal projects too. So if I move to an AI department, it would be beneficial for both of us as you have seen my work from past 5 years and I have knowledge about our company very well.
In last 5 years, I have made really great connection here and this company now feels like home. I absolutely love the company policies and people I work with, therefore I do not wish to leave this company but just to change department.
I hope you will accept my application to change the department.
Yours faithfully,
Rishi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outlined your current skills, explained the mutual benefits of a transfer to the AI department, and expressed your commitment to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more fully developed; for instance, when mentioning your 'personal projects' in AI, briefly describing one would provide more concrete evidence of your suitability for the new role, further strengthening your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing that separates the introduction, the body points, and the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between your current finance role and your interest in AI could be bridged more naturally to show a clearer link between your past experience and future goals.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'profound knowledge', 'beneficial', and 'company policies'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'which is a finance' (should be 'which is in finance') and 'gain the profound knowledge' (should be 'gained profound knowledge'). While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate your score. Focus on using more sophisticated vocabulary related to professional development and workplace transitions to show greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'from past couple of years' (missing 'the'), 'learning it from last 2 years' (should be 'for the last 2 years'), and 'I have gain' (should be 'I have gained'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and the use of articles. Increasing your use of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
